I used to have a household help who was like an angel. She thought of everything. In the summer she attached mosquito nets to our windows without being asked. She replaced the vinegar cleaner by good parquet cleaner in order to make our floors shiny again. She showed me that I have to wash potatoes three times before frying them so they will become nice and crunchy. She taught me the trick how to roll out dough on a sheet of backing paper without it slipping away( put a wet cloth underneith the paper).
Before he died Jesus told his disciples in John 14: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
The Holy Spirit is a kind of household help for our soul. We get it when we give our life to Jesus.
The Bible describes this fulfillment with the Holy Spirit as the baptism. It completely fills your soul, when you ask God for it. You can do it now.
Jesus gladly gives it to you.
Here are the three things that the Holy Spirit wants to do in you:
1. The Holy Spirit is our advisor
John 14, 26: “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.
I still remember an argument I had with my household help. She wanted me to buy a window squeege that I thought was too expencive so I went and bought a cheap one.
She was appalled! She let me clean one of the windows with it. I had to admit that it left behind horrible streaks.
The exact same thing will happen with the Holy Spirit.
You hear him through your inner voice.
If you are still unsure which of your inner voices is the Holy Spirit then ask God a question and write down the different voices you hear inside yourself. Like a conversation with yourself. Then you ask God to show you the answer of his spirit. It’s either one of the answers you wrote down or you’ll hear one ore more new answers. The more often you do it the better you will understand the Holy Spirit. Only practice makes perfect.
How often is advisable?
Once a week. If you do it a lot less you’ll always have difficulties understanding the Holy Spirit in crucial situations.
In Jacob 1 it says that we needen’t worrie whether we can understand God when we have asked for his wisdom. Just believe that God talks to you.
Important: The voice of the Holy Spirit doesn’t contradict the Bible! When you hear, for example, that you’re supposed to get divorced from your partner, then it’s probably Gods opponent who his disguising himself.
2. The Holy Spirit brings forth good character traits
My family also loved our house fairy. The kids raved about her because she sometimes left flowers on the table and the house alwys smelled great after she had been there.
Galatians 5: “But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.”
When Satan seduces us it can sometimes bring peace, joy and strength in the short term, but that is only his desguisement. In the long term his true face shows which is division and unkindness.
Instead the Holy Spirit wants to educate you, if you let him. You learn from him how to love your partner they way he is – with all his imperfections. He will teach you how to love God in difficult times, how to thank him and trust in him, even though you don’t feel like it.
The Holy Spirit leaves a beautifull smell and other people like being around you.
But that’s not all. There is more :
3. The Holy Spirit gives you spiritual gifts
1 Corinthians 12: “The Spirit gives one person a message full of wisdom, while to another person the same Spirit gives a message full of knowledge. One and the same Spirit gives faith to one person, while to another person he gives the power to heal.”
I grew up without a GPS. The first GPS – my friend called it “TOM-TOM” – was quite mysterious to me. It just didn’t go into my brain that that little plastic box was supposed to know all the streets in the world, was able to speak and knew my location. To me that was simply impossible.
When I used this TOM – TOM for the first time I was very stressed. I checked it’s instructions with my good old street map that I had placed on the seat next to me. Sweat dripped down my forehead.
But I arrived at my destination.
The second and third time I didn’t feel much better using it but now it’s completely natural and I don’t want to drive without it anymore.
The Holy Spirit gives us super natural talents that we can’t understand with our humanly mind. In the beginning they felt as strange as the GPS but today I don’t want to live without them.
Let me explain three of my favorite spiritual gifts:
1 Corinthians 14: “Set your hearts on spiritual gifts, especially the gift of proclaiming God’s message. But those who proclaim God’s message speak to people and give them help, encouragement, and comfort.”
The prophetic gift is an inner voice that the Holy Spirit doesn’t use to talk to you but to other people that you pray for.
Here’s your exercise: You ask God to share his thoughts about a specific person that you have on your heart. Write down the thought, picture or bible verse that comes into your head. Then you show the other person that prophecy of yours. The other person has to examine the prophecy since the Bible says that every prophecy has to be examined. Does it apply or not?
I once had the impression that I was supposed to go up to a young mother who was walking on the side walk with ther baby, to tell her that Gold loves her. I didn’t know this woman and it cost me so much courage to talk to her. But I did it.
The woman started crying and showed me her baby. It had several tubes attached to it’s body. The young mother told me sobbing that she doesn’t believe in God. But her baby is terribly sick and stopped breathing last night. She yelled at God and threatened him. And now I came up to her and told her that God loved her!
Long story short: I prayed for the baby, the woman confessed to Jesus and the baby was healed.
The Holy Spirit want’s to do miraculous things through you, you just have to be brave and practice. Practice. Practice.
Healing of the sick
This one might be the most difficult for us people from the western civilization. I don’t exactly know why, but I also pray for healing of sickness a lot without anything happening at first.
But I know that much more healings happen in other countries like India and Africa. Personally I think it’s because of our western lack of faith. But it doesn’t matter right now.
Thomas Edison built 999 light bulbs that didn’t work. It took 1000 tries until he was successful.
I pray for healing whenever I have the possibilty. I ask you to do it with me. If all of us pray all of the time then we’ll soon reach the 999 tries and meanwhile we can witness miracles.
Like in the story of the mother and her baby.
Speaking in tongues
Oooooh, how I love it!
1 Corinthians 14, 2: “Those who speak in strange tongues do not speak to others but to God, because no one understands them. They are speaking secret truths by the power of the Spirit.”
Without the ability to pray in tongues I often wouldn’t pray for more than 5 minutes. Everything was said and then my thoughts wander off.
But then the Holy Spirit steps in for me.
I just start to pray in his language, which I don’t understand, but it gives me strength.
In this language, I can easily pray for 1 – 2 hours and afterwards I feel like I have been spiritually massaged. In this kind of prayer I fight my spiritual wars. Before my inner eye these words that I don’t understand are like arrows that rout the enemies.
Then you can just incorporate the tongues in your daily prayer. It’s a little weird in the beginning and sometimes only consists of a couple words. But with practice it’ll get more and stronger.
When our household fairy had to quit her job due to personal reasons our house became a dusty hole.
But thanks to the Lord: The Holy Spirit stays!
The only thing that can happen is that you aggrieve him and thus take away his space within you:
James 4, 30: “Don’t insult the Holy Spirit. When God gave him to you he marked you. Therefor you must not feel bitterness or anger any longer. Don’t yell at each other, don’t talk badly about one another and avoid any resentment.”
But if you search Gods will with a true heart his spirit will always help you to throw out everything that is garbage in Gods eyes. Don’t worry:
The spirit of God is an invincible warrior!
